C’est une question «idiote», j’en conviens. Pourtant il y a des moments ou j’ai l’impression que, dès que je vois une œuvre reproduite dans une revue ou un livre, elle est faussée. Faussée dans son véritable aspect, dans sa puissance, dans sa sensibilité. Il y a des peinture qui gagnent d’être reproduites, il y a des peintures qui y perdent. Il y a d’abord la matière ou l’absence de la matière . Puis il y a des couleurs couvrantes qui sont plus facilement reproductible que les couleurs transparentes. Donc les peintures à grosse matière y gagnent, les peintures réalisées par glacis s’écrasent et les peintures qui sont faites des deux sont carrément <br />irreproductibles. Il y a les couleurs qui y sont faussée, mais c’est connu et inévitable. N’en parlons plus.<br /><br /> Puis il y a des peintures qui supportent la réduction et des peintures qui ne la supportent pas. Dans notre époque de l’efficacité et de la communication rapide, une peinture recadrée sur une tête ou à la rigueur sur un buste, en reproduction, fait plus d’effet qu’une assemblée autour d’une table. Un détail d’une œuvre <br />picturale en jette plus que l’ ensemble d’une composition.<br /><br /> Il y a aussi sans doute le goût de la perfection. J’ai eu un ami, chef de fabrication dans une agence de publicité, qui aimait passionnément la peinture, mais qui préférait regarder les reproductions que l’originale. Le moindre poile de pinceau lui était insupportable. Le moindre grain de pigment sous le vernis le répugnait. Mais ceci lui venait sans doute aussi du fait d’être confronté toute la journée à la perfection des photos, où, objets et mannequins retouchés à «mort», maquillés, poudrés, repeints à la surface, impeccablement éclairés, <br />parfaitement installés, ne tolèrent plus de côtoyer une peinture, dans laquelle l'imperfection faite de cette «vibration» humaine qui la différencie d’une photo, dérange.. Les deux ne peuvent pas cohabiter. Le dessin et la photo oui. On peut même mélanger les deux. Mais photo et peinture sont incompatibles. Ils jurent. A moins que nous reproduisons des peintures qui plagient la photo. Là, on ne verra plus la différence.<br /><br /> Puis, not to last, il y a la saturation, la répétition, l’écoeurement, l'abus de la reproduction. Cela se sent déjà d’avance. Peut-on supporter de voir des milliers de fois, du matin au soir, partout sur notre chemin, une belle peinture sur une affiche, donc en reproduction, à qui manque cette vibration humaine de la peinture faite d’émotion et de main, de matière? Peut-on supporter sa vue long temps sans en être lassé? Peut-on encore voir la Joconde après avoir été violée, transformée, dénaturée, retouché, maquillée, déguisée, utilisée, abusé, détournée, manipulée dans un but commerciale ou picturale, sans en éprouver un certain écoeurement?<br /><br /> Enfin il y a la position personnelle devant la multiplication d’une œuvre unique. L’œuvre unique doit être regardé d’une manière unique. Toute reproduction le vide chaque fois un peu plus de son originalité. Combien de fois m’est arrivé d’avoir admiré la reproduction d’une peinture répétée trop souvent et, lorsque j’ai pu enfin m'approcher de l’originale, en être déçu. Il y a aussi le pourquoi. Pourquoi une œuvre est elle reproduite? Pour être diffusée, être vu à travers le pays, à travers le monde, être «dispersée». Elle se revête tout de suite du manteau de l’oeuvre mercantile. L’œuvre est devenue une œuvre montrée et démontrée, donc <br />convoitée, donc désirée, donc mise en vente. Faire de la peinture profondément de soi même devait nous interdire de la voir reproduite. La première partie de cet ouvrage traite de la mainmise de l’État sur un type d’art, l’art conceptuel que Mme de Kerros réduit aux initiales « AC » : Aude de Kerros y décrit avec acuité le tournant pris par l’art occidental vers une production purement et simplement «spéculative». Elle retrace de façon extrêmement intéressante le virage effectué par l’art contemporain européen avant les années 1950 et la façon dont les arts américains ont été rationalisés pour être promulgués ensuite à travers le monde par des moyens politico-commerciaux inimaginables. Même la CIA semble avoir été mise à contribution. Nous connaissons les moyens employés. Les films de reportage </span><i>Mondevino</i><span style="font-style: normal;"> et </span><i>Monsanto</i><span style="font-style: normal;"> nous l’ont fait découvrir. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">Vers la fin de son ouvrage en revanche, Aude de Kerros, sans doute sur les recommandations de son éditeur – ne pas uniquement démolir, reconstruire et faire des contre-propositions pour que le livre se vende –, évoque les artistes qui sont les sauveurs de l'art «caché», cet art qui échappe à l’AC de l’État. Et elle retombe alors exactement dans ce qu’elle condamnait quelques chapitres auparavant. Elle cite des peintres représentatifs pour elle de cet art caché, qui sont en fait ceux de son monde à elle, monde que le lecteur perçoit parfois entre les lignes, et qui est extrêmement politique. Les peintres évoqués ne sont pas plus représentatifs que d’autres<span style="color: red;"> </span>de l’art contemporain,<span style="color: red;"> </span>mais réconfortent son clan. La crainte que je ressens en lisant le livre d’Aude de Kerros, c’est celle de voir ceux qui prendront la relève de l’AC être pires que les pourfendeurs de cette AC. Le conventionnel en plus. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">Viennent ensuite dans <i>L’Art caché</i><span style="font-style: normal;"> des pages que je ne comprends pas. Aude de Kerros fustige « la mort », thème majeur de l’AC qu’elle oppose à la «beauté, l’harmonie, la composition, la vraie peinture »<span style="color: blue;">.</span> Déjà cette opposition n’a pas lieu d’être. Elle révèle une approche totalement inculte et unilatérale. Depuis la première peinture chrétienne, la peinture occidentale évoque la vie, la mort et la résurrection. Toutes les peintures d'expression spirituelles de tous les temps font allusion à la mort. Tous les maîtres de la peinture «classique» se sont intéressés tôt ou tard à la mort. C’est normal, c’est une préoccupation majeure de l’être humain. Ceux qui en ont peur, ceux qui l’occultent, ceux qui trichent avec elle seront les premiers surpris. Comme la peinture est l’un des sept langages de l’homme, les hommes expriment à travers la peinture leurs préoccupations ou leurs angoisses devant la mort. Ce n’est qu’au <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">xix</span><sup>e</sup> siècle avec l’impressionnisme – et ce particulièrement en France – que l’on élimine la mort de la peinture pour se mettre en quête de la «beauté». Mais la beauté picturale ne se résume pas à la peinture française du <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">xix</span><sup>e</sup> siècle comme semble le croire Aude de Kerros. La beauté est multiple. Les préoccupations picturales des hommes ont connu de nombreux changements au cours des siècles. La façon d’appréhender le monde, la réflexion philosophique sur le monde et les techniques employées en peinture se sont modifiées. Les beautés aussi. Pourquoi prétendre que la seule beauté possible soit celle de la peinture française du <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">xix</span><sup>e</sup> siècle, une beauté de la bourgeoisie régnante. Pourquoi devrait-on revenir à cette esthétique? Faut-il uniquement se limiter à ce moment où la mort a été occultée? D’ailleurs, elle ne l’a pas été totalement car certains peintres ont quand même pendant cette période «osé parler» de la mort. Dans leurs écrits, dans leurs entretiens et dans leur peinture. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">Prétendre que la peinture de la nature ou de la réalité est le seul art éternel et l’archétype de la beauté est lamentable. Depuis la Grèce antique, la beauté a pris de nombreux visages différents et elle était même déjà multiforme dans la Grèce antique. Entre la Grèce primitive et la Grèce hellénistique, il y a un monde. Entre l’art roman et l’art gothique, il y a un monde. Entre les primitifs flamands et Rembrandt, il y a un monde. Entre Le Titien et Goya, il y a un monde. Ne parlons même pas d’El Greco. Peindre d’après la réalité serait la seule voie vers le beau ? Mais regardez par exemple les sculptures de personnages accroupis réalisées par Michel Ange : ils seraient incapables de tenir sur leurs jambes tellement ils sont «disproportionnés». Se conformer à ce qui est réel, c’est ronronner confortablement dans une conception rassurante de l’art éternel. Lorsque Rembrandt a entrepris sa propre quête de la beauté, il a été abandonné par ses commanditaires. Lorsque Goya a poursuivi sa route sur les chemins de l’inconnu, le monde du pouvoir espagnol lui a tourné le dos. Il faut relire Rainer-Maria Rilke, sa «Lettre à un jeune poète». La vérité se trouve là et non dans un quelconque retour à des canons d’une autre époque. En outre, on ne peut tout de même pas oublier que la peinture a été poussée par l’invention de la photographie sur d’autres voies que la copie de la réalité.</div><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;"><br clear="ALL" style="page-break-before: always;" /> </span> <div class="MsoNormal"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">La vraie question demeure : qu’est-ce que la beauté? Pour Dostoïevsky, la beauté qui va sauver le monde est la beauté intérieure. Cette beauté-là n’est pas réductible à une époque, une opinion politique ou une organisation sociétale. On ne la trouve pas non plus dans un passé révolu. Elle n’est pas la propriété d’un clan, d’une caste régnante, d’une convention. Ce que décrit Aude de Kerros n’est pas le beau. La vraie beauté, le reflet de la vie, doit tenir compte de la mort, ne peut exister sans elle. Puis avec la peinture humaniste, les préoccupations devinrent moins divines et plus terrestres : l’homme et son portrait, l’homme et son histoire, l’homme et ses peurs. Ensuite domina le «réalisme historique» et parallèlement, se développa la peinture de la nature morte, du paysage, de la réalité extérieure, celle vue par nos yeux, nos propres yeux. Enfin, laissant la représentation du réel à la photographie, la peinture<span style=""> </span>se tourna vers d’autres expressions, ouvrant alors la voie à des possibilités insoupçonnées.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Arriva alors ce qui arrive toujours face à la nouveauté : perdus dans ce <i style="">no man’s land</i>, les peintres firent désespérément machine arrière et se raccrochèrent à la fameuse paille qui permet de ne pas se noyer, le « retour aux sources ». Lorsque le bredouillement des nouvelles peintures devint incompréhensible aux non-initiés, il fallut revenir à une peinture simple : <i style="">die neue Sachlichkeit,</i> par exemple, en Allemagne. </p> <p class="MsoNormal">Puis l’art s’aventura encore vers des domaines inédits. Mais aujourd’hui, comme précédemment, le vertige de l’inconnu provoque une inévitable perdition, et le retour aux sources, ou supposé sources, paraît seul salvateur. Cela s’exprime à travers un art figuratif de la plus haute perfection, une peinture travaillée d’après, sur et avec des photos, sans interprétation, sans transposition, sans émotion. C’est la technique qui prime, c’est la représentation de la réalité visible qui nous est servie avec virtuosité. </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;"> </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">Cette mode d’une peinture qui imite la photo n’est pas de la peinture. Même si elle est techniquement impeccable, ou peut-être justement à cause de cela. C’est, à la rigueur, de l’illustration ou un plagiat de photo. Elle ne comporte ni transposition, ni rapport pictural de couleurs et de valeurs, ni émotion, ni matière. Elle rejoint la peinture froide ou mécanique des arts décoratifs. Son manque d’humanité en fait un produit de luxe pour une population de luxe en terre conquise du non-risque. Karl Jaspers a dit que le perfectionnisme n’était qu’une façon de se mettre à l'abri des reproches, rien de plus. </p> <p class="MsoNormal">. </p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;">J’ai personnellement un peu de mal avec cette peinture. Travailler d’après photo, c’est<span style=""> </span>éliminer toute émotion et toute expression de la personnalité de l’artiste. Je ne crois pas que l’on peut appeler cela de la peinture. La représentation d’un bœuf dans la grotte de Lascaux est sortie de la tête ou du cœur d’un homme après de longues observations de la nature. Je ne pense pas que ce bœuf ait posé dans la grotte, encore moins que l’artiste de Lascaux ait eu une photo sous la main. Les acquis des sociétés humaines ont besoin, de temps en temps, pour ne pas se perdre dans le vide du non-retour, de revenir aux sources originelles. L’homme doit régulièrement s’y immerger pour ne pas se dissoudre dans l’univers. Ce même bain de Jouvence est également indispensable aux arts. Et les peintures de la grotte de Lascaux permettent en ce sens de retrouver l'essentiel de la peinture. Une sorte de vérité incontournable. Les artistes, à l’origine de la peinture, avaient un don d’observation remarquable et ils ont travaillé exclusivement de mémoire. Alors que le travail contemporain, qui consiste à plagier des photos, des reproductions ou d’autres images techniques, est un travail totalement extérieur à l’homme, qui ne passe pas par son intériorité : une sorte de trompe-l’œil au sens propre du terme. Ce manifeste démontre une fois de plus que l’homo artistus qui n’est qu’un sous groupe de l’homo ordinarus, n’est pas satisfait de son sort car loin de ce satisfaire de ce qu’il a, il convoite ce qu’il n’a pas. Voici donc, tout en haut de l’affiche, artistus archi célébrus qui se plaint sur le net, de ce que la création en général et peut-être la sienne pourrait être bridée par l’effroyable pesanteur politicus économicus à la mode. Il rêve de revenir à l’âge de l’artistus préhistorique, de s’éloigner des méfaits de la civilisation, car croit-il, le vrai artiste honnête, est celui des iles désertes.<br /><br />Artistus basic qui passe par là en surfant sur le blog de la biennale 109, objet de ses convoitises, d’autant plus que l’endroit a la réputation d’être inaccessible à sa catégorie, voit toute l’aubaine à profiter de la situation. Il lui propose d’échanger sa place d’artiste inconnu honnête avec la sienne. L’affaire est conclue. Dans sa lutte contre l’art consacré – c’est-à-dire celui qui est prescrit, favorisé et promulgué par des forces politico-commerciales –, le peintre ne doit pas oublier que les seules forces capables de renverser les tendances officielles ne peuvent être que des forces groupées, déjà récupérées, donc de nouvelles forces politico-idéologico-commerciales. En conséquence, sa marge de « liberté » est extrêmement étroite.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Pourtant l’artiste peintre doit lutter pour rester libre et indépendant car c’est à cette seule condition qu’il est un artiste.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Mais cette indépendance indispensable a un prix. Elle nécessite en premier lieu une très grande honnêteté envers lui-même et une aptitude à affronter la solitude. Les choix librement consentis placent le peintre devant ses responsabilités et le laissent seul face à lui-même et presque toujours seul au sein de la société dans laquelle il vit. Cette solitude peut être ensuite source d’angoisse et d’incertitudes, et lui devenir fatale, s’il connaît des revers. Personne ne sera là pour lui porter secours.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Dans sa lutte pour l’indépendance et le maintien de sa liberté de choix, la survie pratique constitue un autre problème majeur du peintre. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Il peut, par chance, être à l’abri des problèmes financiers grâce à sa famille ou grâce à un héritage qui le dote d’une fortune personnelle confortable. Un bon patrimoine favorise de nombreuses existences artistiques et développe presque toujours une peinture un peu mondaine, avenante, agréable pour ne pas dire esthétique ou décorative. Cette «chance» n’en est pas forcément une car elle procure à l’artiste des conditions de vie qui l’éloignent de la force du réel et ne sont pas nécessairement bénéfiques à son art.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Certains artistes quant à eux, volontairement ou non, ont un conjoint ou un compagnon fortuné ou généreux, qui peut pourvoir aux nécessités de la vie quotidienne pour deux et ils n’ont donc pas à se préoccuper de leurs moyens d’existence.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">L’artiste qui doit gagner sa vie, en revanche, est obligé de trouver des activités lucratives qui lui permettent de subsister. Aussi longtemps qu’il ne peut pas vivre de sa propre peinture, il<span style=""> </span>doit avoir un ou plusieurs gagne-pain : une peinture qui est le fruit d’un aboutissement personnel, en dehors des sentiers battus, est rarement reconnue et d’un revenu financier hasardeux. De nombreux artistes mènent ainsi une double vie, une triple vie et exercent plusieurs métiers parallèlement à leur art. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 35.4pt;"><span style="font-family: Arial;">La seule obligation que devrait connaître le peintre, est de faire «sa» peinture. C’est à travers elle qu’il vit et qu’il existe. Mais la plupart du temps, outre subvenir à ses moyens d’existence, il est aussi amené à gérer tout un ensemble d’obligations nécessaires à la promotion de sa peinture. C'est un court roman libertin donc immoral qui présente la particularité d'être... rythmé? illustré? structuré? interprété? ...par 7 toiles de 7 peintres allant de Fra Angelico à Francis Bacon. Un régal.</span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Arial;">Mis en bouche par cette première lecture, plaisante mais cruelle, je mis la main sur un deuxième roman <strong>"Le Paradis - un peu plus loin" </strong>Folio 4161.
